Four more performers announced for the 2008 MTV VMA’s

MTV announced last Thursday four more artists that will be performing on the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards show: Rihanna, Pink, Paramore, and T.I.  They will be joining the previously announced artists…The Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, and Kid Rock…onstage for the show.  Rihanna, who performed last year with Chris Brown to perform her song “Umbrella,” will most likely be performing her current chart-topper “Disturbia.”  Pink is slated to perform her new song “So What,” while Paramore will be performing “Misery Business.”  T.I. is making a return to an awards show stage after being arrested last October before the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta and accused of trying to buy machine guns and silencers; he was sentenced earlier this year to serve about a year in prison after completing at least 1,000 hours of community service.  I’m going to give you the chart history of these four performers on the Billboard charts.

Rihanna currently has three albums (not including EP’s.)  2005’s Music of the Sun went Gold and contained two singles: “Pon De Replay,” which peaked at #2; and “If it’s Lovin’ That You Want,” which peaked at #36.  2006’s A Girl Like Me went Platinum and contained four singles: “SOS,” which peaked at #1; “Unfaithful,” which peaked at #6; “We Ride,” which peaked at #106; and “Break it Off” (featuring Sean Paul), which peaked at #9.  2007’s Good Girl Gone Bad (and 2008’s re-released version, Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded) went 2x Platinum and contained seven singles (the last three from Reloaded): “Umbrella” (featuring Jay-Z), which peaked at #1; “Shut Up and Drive,” which peaked at #15; “Don’t Stop the Music,” which peaked at #3; “Hate That I Love You” (featuring Ne-Yo), which peaked at #7; “Take a Bow,” which peaked at #1; “If I Never See Your Face Again” (with Maroon 5), which peaked at #51; and “Disturbia” peaked at #1.

Pink currently has four albums, and a fifth album to be released on October 28.  I’m only going to concentrate on her top 10 singles from these albums and not soundtracks or collaborations.  2000’s Can’t Take Me Home went 2x Platinum and contained two top 10 singles: “There You Go,” which peaked at #7; and “Most Girls,” which peaked at #4.  2001’s M!ssundaztood went 5x Platinum and contained three top 10 singles: “Get the Party Started,” which peaked at #4; “Don’t Let Me Get Me,” which peaked at #8; and “Just Like a Pill,” which also peaked at #8.  2003’s Try This went Platinum, but it didn’t have any top 10 singles.  2006’s I’m Not Dead went Platinum and contained two top 10 singles: “Who Knew,” which peaked at #9; and “U + Ur Hand,” which also peaked at #9.  Her new album, Funhouse, contains the new single “So What.”

Paramore currently have two albums.  2005’s All We Know is Falling sold $232,235 domestic copies and didn’t chart any singles.  2007’s Riot! went Platinum and contained three charting singles: “Misery Business,” which peaked at #26; “Crushcrushcrush,” which peaked at #54; and “That’s What You Get,” which peaked at #66.

T.I. currently has five albums, and a sixth album to be released on September 30.  Like Pink, I’m going to concentrate only on the top 10 singles and featured appearances on other artist’s songs.  2001’s I’m Serious had U.S. sales of 300,000 and didn’t have any top 10 singles.  2003’s Trap Muzik went Platinum, but didn’t contain any top 10 singles.  2004’s Urban Legend went Platinum and contained the top 10 single “Bring Em Out,” which peaked at #9.  2006’s King went Platinum and contained the top 10 single “What You Know,” which peaked at #3.  2007’s T.I. vs. T.I.P. went Platinum and contained the top 10 single “Big Things Poppin’ (Do It),” which peaked at #9.  His new album, Paper Trail, has four singles released, but none of them have made it to the top 10 (or the top 40) yet.

The VMAs are set for Sept. 7 in Los Angeles with British comedian Russell Brand as the host.  Be sure to tune in and enjoy the outrageous antics that will be talked about for months…like this one!
