Break out the cherry chapstick…the reign of the Perry is over! Katy Perry’s 7-week stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her song, “I Kissed a Girl,” has ended, and the new #1 song is…(drumroll)…Rihanna’s “Disturbia.” After selling 148,000 downloads, the song leapfrogs over Chris Brown’s “Forever” (which remains at #2) to take the top spot. So…how long will we get disturbed by the Rihanna song now? “Forever” has a bullet, so it could be a contender. The other contender is M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which is the week’s Sales Gainer, jumping from #16 to #5 with a bullet. the song is in the trailer for the movie Pineapple Express, but is not in the movie itself or on the soundtrack (an interesting aside: I went to Best Buy to buy the soundtrack, since my favorite artist, Huey Lewis & The News, performs the movie’s title track…and they had already deleted it out of their system! I had to order it online. Maybe if the producers of the soundtrack had known that the movie’s trailer song would be more popular than the music within the movie, then they could have included it as a bonus track or something.) I’m sorry…but I would like to find out who is making “I Kissed a Girl” the number one song for a seventh week. Katy Perry’s song doesn’t have a bullet this week, but I’m guessing that continued digital sales and increasing radio airplay are what is keeping it on top. Chris Brown’s “Forever” jumps to the #2 position with a bullet, and Rihanna’s “Disturbia” moves from #4 to #3 with a bullet (selling a week-best 140,000 digital downloads.) Both songs are still contenders again, but then I thought the same thing last week. I’m pretty sure that Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” which is still #6 with a bullet, is not going to make a miraculous jump to the peak position. I’m also doubtful that The Jonas’ Brothers’ “Tonight” will do it either. It’s actually the top debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week at #8 with a bullet, but their previous song, “Burnin’ Up,” was also the top debut that week, coming in at #5. It dropped quickly after that, so I think that will be the fate for “Tonight.” (more…)

“I Kissed a Girl”…number one for a sixth week…really? Katy Perry…I can’t believe you have thwarted all challengers this summer for the peak position on the chart. She had digital sales of 151,000 copies this week, which is why she is still on top. Chris Brown’s “Forever,” currently still in the #3 position with a bullet, remains a contender to take over…but the new serious contender is Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” which jumps from #15 to #4 with a bullet. Also is play is Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” which jumps from #8 to #6 with a bullet. (more…)

I gotta give it to Katy Perry…a fifth week at #1 for her ode to lesbianism (or at least bi-curiousity)…”I Kissed a Girl”…is an impressive feat. The song sold more than 166,000 downloads in the U.S., which is why it is still #1. So…who is going to dethrone her next week? I said last week that Chris Brown’s “Forever” was the only possible contender, and this week he is still the only contender. He is currently at #3 with a bullet (up one from #4), and he is the top digital sales gainer. (more…)

Shawn the Chart Guy here…I am so glad to see Katy Perry at #1 for a fourth week in a row with her smash hit “I Kissed a Girl.” I saw her perform it on the Spike TV Guy’s Choice Awards, and also last week on FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” The song is so peppy! Even though last week I felt like Perry was going to have a fourth week at the top, it seemed like Rhianna might make a miraculous return to the top after two months with her song “Take a Bow” (it was #1 for one week back in May.) The song is still #2 though, but it has lost its bullet, so the next serious contender is Chris Brown’s “Forever,” which is currently #4 with a bullet, and it is the top digital download sales gainer this week.
