You all still like “Whatever You Like,” because T.I.’s boring tune spends a fifth non-consecutive week at #1 and is the Airplay Gainer again for the third week in a row. Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” is still at #3, but it has lost its bullet, and the hopes of a country song topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart were dashed when Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” fell from #5 to #9 and lost its bullet. At this point, I might as well predict that T.I.’s song will be #1 next week as well, because there really aren’t any strong contenders. Katy Perry’s second top 10 hit “Hot N Cold” rises from #9 to #6 with a bullet, and M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” is still lingering around the top 10, this week rising from #6 to #5 (though the song has already peaked at #4 so far.) If “Whatever You Like” spends two more weeks at #1, it will eclipse Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” to be the second longest running song of 2008 (the longest running song is “Low” by Flo Rida featuring T-Pain at 10 weeks.) I guess that T.I. is “Whatever You Like,” because his song is #1 for a third week with a bullet. It has sold 145,000 copies in the United States this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and it is the Greatest Airplay Gainer for the week as well. To be honest with you…the song is a little boring. I certainly hope that Pink’s “So What” takes the top spot next week. Last week it became her highest charting song to date at #3 (beating her former peaks of 2000’s “Most Girls” and 2002’s “Get the Party Started”…both of which peaked at #4), but this week, it is at #2 with a bullet. It is also the Greatest Digital Gainer after selling 197,000 downloads. Other possible contenders to take T.I.’s crown many, as the top nine songs all have bullets. Pink is a big one, but another one is “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, who moves from #9 to #6. Last week I said that he probably won’t make it to #1 because the song is too quirky, but I have been surprised before. I originally thought that Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” wouldn’t make it…but it went on to top the chart for seven weeks. The last big threat may be from Flo Rida featuring will.i.am’s “In the Ayer,” which jumps from #21 to #9. I have been hearing the song everywhere, from radio airplay to a featured appearance in an episode of the CW’s “One Tree Hill.” I don’t think that it will take the top spot next week, but it might in two weeks. I hope that it does, because it is a fun little dance song that I could see all the high school kids requesting that it be played at their homecoming dances this fall (I should know…I am a part-time mobile DJ on the weekends when I’m not being The Chart Guy.) One possible last contender is the charity single “Just Stand Up!” by Artists Stand Up to Cancer, featuring an all-star group of pop/R&B/rock performers, including Beyoncé Knowles, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Natasha Bedingfield, Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Keyshia Cole, LeAnn Rimes, Ashanti, and Ciara. Last week it debuted at #78, and this week it rockets to #11. Could it be the next “We are the World” by USA for Africa? (more…)

Since I’ve been blogging about the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards for weeks, I thought I would give you my impressions of the show. The host, British comedian Russell Brand (the new boyfriend in this year’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall), wasn’t very funny in my opinion. He starts off with stumping for Barack Obama and bagging on Bush. I’m not on anyone’s side politically, but I don’t know why a comedian who can’t even vote in this country has any say at all. He then goes on to make fun of tween dreamboat rock act The Jonas Brothers mercilessly. He joked about their purity rings, which they each wear vowing not to have sex before marriage. I could maybe understand him poking fun of them once…but those poor boys were picked on for most of the show! After fellow purity ring wearer Jordin Sparks responded that “not every guy and girl wants to be a slut, OK?,” Brand sort of apologized, but he made one last jab by saying, “Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody.” I’m no prude or all that religious, but if the Brothers Jonas made a decision to abstain, it shouldn’t be ridiculed so heavily. This is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, so I wouldn’t deny Brand his right to free speech, but I think that he could have spread the snark around a little to other celebrities instead of ganging up on the J-Bros. Even though this is only the second week for the run of Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” the Billboard Hot100 chart is recording historic firsts. As Puck reported on Thursday, “American Idol” Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta had the best debut on the charts in 18 months with his #2 song “Crush.” The last time a song debuted in the #2 slot was in January of 2007, when Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” debuted (and peaked) there. It’s also the highest debut for an “AI” alum for a song not originally performed on the show. Furthermore, it’s the second time that the runner-up from the show has bested the winner on the charts, since winner David Cook’s single “The Time of My Life” only peaked at #3 (though it currently sits at #28 with a bullet this week based on actual radio airplay and not just digital downloads.) The first time that happened was when Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken peaked at #1 with his song “This is the Night” over winner Ruben Studdard’s #2 song “Flying Without Wings.” Where do we go from here? “Disturbia” still has a bullet, but if “Crush” gains some airplay, it may topple Rihanna next week (it isn’t anywhere within the top 25 on the Airplay chart.) None of the songs within the Top 10 pose much of a threat to Rihanna (except for the Archuleta song)…including the new one by Taylor Swift, whose song “Change” (from the Olympic AT&T Team USA soundtrack) debuts on the chart at #10. So Rihanna’s somewhat lackluster tune about her mind going to a scary place has held onto the number one spot for a second week… but barely. Crush by David Archuleta enjoyed the best debut in the last 18 month’s coming in at #2. Don’t get me wrong…. I’m not ripping in Rihanna, I just don’t feel that Disturbia is that strong of a tune and the lyrics are somewhat lame. Sure, it’s got a good beat, but that alone does not make it a great tune. Here’s proof …. (more…)

Katy Perry’s reign has finally come to an end. The number one slot is now in Rihanna’s hot little hands with her newest radio sensation Disturbia. It’s lyrics may not be as fun, tongue-in-check and scandalous as Perry’s, but the beat is undeniable. Within the first few seconds you find your toes tapping to this disturbingly catchy dance song. As much as I found myself tiring of Miss Perry’s female on female antics, I also find myself longing for the song that can arguably be dubbed as the “summer song of 2008.” Are we really ready for a new #1?

Break out the cherry chapstick…the reign of the Perry is over! Katy Perry’s 7-week stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her song, “I Kissed a Girl,” has ended, and the new #1 song is…(drumroll)…Rihanna’s “Disturbia.” After selling 148,000 downloads, the song leapfrogs over Chris Brown’s “Forever” (which remains at #2) to take the top spot. So…how long will we get disturbed by the Rihanna song now? “Forever” has a bullet, so it could be a contender. The other contender is M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which is the week’s Sales Gainer, jumping from #16 to #5 with a bullet. the song is in the trailer for the movie Pineapple Express, but is not in the movie itself or on the soundtrack (an interesting aside: I went to Best Buy to buy the soundtrack, since my favorite artist, Huey Lewis & The News, performs the movie’s title track…and they had already deleted it out of their system! I had to order it online. Maybe if the producers of the soundtrack had known that the movie’s trailer song would be more popular than the music within the movie, then they could have included it as a bonus track or something.) So it would seem that Miss Perry is more than just a one-week wonder, and I think I have a theory as to why ….. she’s cool.
By “She’s Cool” I mean she seems like she’d be fun to have a beer with, shoot the breeze with, talk smack with, etc. She doesn’t seem to take things too seriously …. including her music. For example, check this out:

I’m sorry…but I would like to find out who is making “I Kissed a Girl” the number one song for a seventh week. Katy Perry’s song doesn’t have a bullet this week, but I’m guessing that continued digital sales and increasing radio airplay are what is keeping it on top. Chris Brown’s “Forever” jumps to the #2 position with a bullet, and Rihanna’s “Disturbia” moves from #4 to #3 with a bullet (selling a week-best 140,000 digital downloads.) Both songs are still contenders again, but then I thought the same thing last week. I’m pretty sure that Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” which is still #6 with a bullet, is not going to make a miraculous jump to the peak position. I’m also doubtful that The Jonas’ Brothers’ “Tonight” will do it either. It’s actually the top debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week at #8 with a bullet, but their previous song, “Burnin’ Up,” was also the top debut that week, coming in at #5. It dropped quickly after that, so I think that will be the fate for “Tonight.” (more…)
