The #1 Hot 100 Song and other #1’s on Billboard for the week of August 30, 2008

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Even though this is only the second week for the run of Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” the Billboard Hot100 chart is recording historic firsts.  As Puck reported on Thursday, “American Idol” Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta had the best debut on the charts in 18 months with his #2 song “Crush.”  The last time a song debuted in the #2 slot was in January of 2007, when Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” debuted (and peaked) there.  It’s also the highest debut for an “AI” alum for a song not originally performed on the show.  Furthermore, it’s the second time that the runner-up from the show has bested the winner on the charts, since winner David Cook’s single “The Time of My Life” only peaked at #3 (though it currently sits at #28 with a bullet this week based on actual radio airplay and not just digital downloads.)  The first time that happened was when Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken peaked at #1 with his song “This is the Night” over winner Ruben Studdard’s #2 song “Flying Without Wings.”  Where do we go from here?  “Disturbia” still has a bullet, but if “Crush” gains some airplay, it may topple Rihanna next week (it isn’t anywhere within the top 25 on the Airplay chart.)  None of the songs within the Top 10 pose much of a threat to Rihanna (except for the Archuleta song)…including the new one by Taylor Swift, whose song “Change” (from the Olympic AT&T Team USA soundtrack) debuts on the chart at #10. Rihanna holds on…. barely

So Rihanna’s somewhat lackluster tune about her mind going to a scary place has held onto the number one spot for a second week… but barely.  Crush by David Archuleta enjoyed the best debut in the last 18 month’s coming in at #2.  Don’t get me wrong…. I’m not ripping in Rihanna, I just don’t feel that Disturbia is that strong of a tune and the lyrics are somewhat lame.  Sure, it’s got a good beat, but that alone does not make it a great tune.  Here’s proof …. Have You Visited Disturbia?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Katy Perry’s reign has finally come to an end. The number one slot is now in Rihanna’s hot little hands with her newest radio sensation Disturbia. It’s lyrics may not be as fun, tongue-in-check and scandalous as Perry’s, but the beat is undeniable. Within the first few seconds you find your toes tapping to this disturbingly catchy dance song. As much as I found myself tiring of Miss Perry’s female on female antics, I also find myself longing for the song that can arguably be dubbed as the “summer song of 2008.” Are we really ready for a new #1?

The #1 Hot 100 Song and other #1’s on Billboard for the week of August 23, 2008

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Break out the cherry chapstick…the reign of the Perry is over!  Katy Perry’s 7-week stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for her song, “I Kissed a Girl,” has ended, and the new #1 song is…(drumroll)…Rihanna’s “Disturbia.”  After selling 148,000 downloads, the song leapfrogs over Chris Brown’s “Forever” (which remains at #2) to take the top spot.  So…how long will we get disturbed by the Rihanna song now?  “Forever” has a bullet, so it could be a contender.  The other contender is M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which is the week’s Sales Gainer, jumping from #16 to #5 with a bullet.  the song is in the trailer for the movie Pineapple Express, but is not in the movie itself or on the soundtrack (an interesting aside: I went to Best Buy to buy the soundtrack, since my favorite artist, Huey Lewis & The News, performs the movie’s title track…and they had already deleted it out of their system!  I had to order it online.  Maybe if the producers of the soundtrack had known that the movie’s trailer song would be more popular than the music within the movie, then they could have included it as a bonus track or something.) The #1 Hot 100 Song and other #1’s on Billboard for the week of August 16, 2008

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I’m sorry…but I would like to find out who is making “I Kissed a Girl” the number one song for a seventh week.  Katy Perry’s song doesn’t have a bullet this week, but I’m guessing that continued digital sales and increasing radio airplay are what is keeping it on top.  Chris Brown’s “Forever” jumps to the #2 position with a bullet, and Rihanna’s “Disturbia” moves from #4 to #3 with a bullet (selling a week-best 140,000 digital downloads.)  Both songs are still contenders again, but then I thought the same thing last week.  I’m pretty sure that Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” which is still #6 with a bullet, is not going to make a miraculous jump to the peak position.  I’m also doubtful that The Jonas’ Brothers’ “Tonight” will do it either.  It’s actually the top debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week at #8 with a bullet, but their previous song, “Burnin’ Up,” was also the top debut that week, coming in at #5.  It dropped quickly after that, so I think that will be the fate for “Tonight.” (more…)

The #1 Hot 100 Song and other #1’s on Billboard for the week of August 9, 2008

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

“I Kissed a Girl”…number one for a sixth week…really?  Katy Perry…I can’t believe you have thwarted all challengers this summer for the peak position on the chart.  She had digital sales of 151,000 copies this week, which is why she is still on top.  Chris Brown’s “Forever,” currently still in the #3 position with a bullet, remains a contender to take over…but the new serious contender is Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” which jumps from #15 to #4 with a bullet.  Also is play is Lil Wayne’s “A Milli,” which jumps from #8 to #6 with a bullet. The #1 Hot 100 Song and other #1’s on Billboard for the week of July 19, 2008

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Shawn the Chart Guy, here for the week’s latest in chart news! As I predicted, Katy Perry logged a third week atop the Hot 100 with “I Kissed a Girl.” The Jonas Brothers‘ “Burnin’ Up” was no threat obviously, because it slipped from #5 to #8. It’s going to be a nail-biter next week, because Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” has risen from #4 to #2 this week and is gaining in airplay and digital downloads. The song was number one for a week back in May, but it might possibly return to the top spot next week. (more…)
