The Police end their career at Madison Square Garden

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Sting (vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar, vocals), and Stewart Copeland (drums, percussion, vocals) were a rock/ska trio who formed The Police in 1997.  They released five albums before they broke up in 1984.  They won six Grammys, including Song of the Year for “Every Breath You Take” in 1984 (awarded to songwriter Sting.)  They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 11, 2003.  In 2007, they started a 14-month reunion tour that ended last night in Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Proceeds for that concert went toward arts programming for the city’s public television stations.  The final gross for the tour ($358,825,665) puts it only behind the Rolling Stones’ 2005-2007 A Bigger Bang tour ($558 million), and U2’s 2005-2007 Vertigo tour ($389 million), and ahead of the Stones’ 1994-95 Voodoo Lounge tour ($320 million), according to Billboard Boxscore.  Unlike The Eagles’ neverending “Farewell Tour,” the band claims this is it for them.  There will be no more touring or a release of a new album.  Let’s look back fondly on their Billboard chart achievements.
